Community Garden
Massey University Albany
About us
The aim of the Community Garden is to enhance the Massey University Campus and hence Albany, through the creation of a sense of community identity among our students, staff and local residents.
We wish to heighten awareness and appreciation of the earth we share, and help reduce the food budget strain.
Other goals include building local resiliance, fostering collaboration, educating members about growing food, and the donation of excess produce to student services or the community.
A core process of this club is to be more than just sustainable. Not only do we seek to improve the lives of the people who are involved in the club, the world and environment need to be in better condition because of it.
OUR VISION
Community Gardening is a Grassroots Movement!
OUR HISTORY
2012
Dreamed up by Massey Uni staff and actioned with the enthusiasm of students, a site was selected and the first spade was dug into the earth in September 2011.
It was quickly realised that the site would be tough work, as the ground was made up of hard clays and rocks. Google earth images showed that it used to be a gravel carpark. It was decided that raised garden beds were the go.
Over a couple years four raised garden beds were assembled out of recycled and donated wood.
In the start of 2013 the first bed (which had started to suffer) was replaced with a raised bed kitset made of 50mm thick marocarpa wood. Macrocarpa has natural stabilisers, and has been reported to last anywhere between 5 and 20 years.
The wire screens visible in the photos above keep out the pukekos, who are fond of seedlings and enjoy leafy greens as much as we do!
