Strawberry towers

Strawberry Towers are a column of pipe, with

rows of holes drilled in them. Strawberry plants

are grown in the holes, creating a vertical column

of deliciousness.

The plan is to bring the Strawberry Towers out when the fruit are in season, for all students, staff and guests to enjoy for free.

The towers are constructed out of PVC stormwater pipe, with a polyurethane irrigation pipe down the center which drilled with small holes.

The irrigation pipe is connected to a water timer to ensure quick but very regular watering. You have to wrap the irrigation pipe in weed-netting to stop the strawberry roots from blocking the holes.

The towers are secured in a large pot with about 20 kilos of concrete. This is enough to ensure the tower remains standing in wind gusts as strong as 130km/hr. - initially we used terracotta pots, but these cracked over time, and some broke when the towers toppled over in gusts greater than 130km/hr. We are trying out plastic pots now.
